As part of the Linn County Fair 4-H Poultry check-in yesterday, Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, came to speak to the Linn County 4-H poultry youth. Secretary Northey spoke on poultry health, Avian Influenza and the steps our state government is taking to eradicate the problem. He expressed the devastation that this outbreak has caused statewide in Iowa and across the country. He provided encouragement to the youth concerning their 4-H projects and expressed how he was glad they have such a strong interest in Agriculture.
Jackie Bohlken, chairman of Linn County 4-H Poultry Committee, stated “We all were very impressed that Bill was willing to come to our county fair to encourage our youth. He has joined the ranks of our fowl friends.”
The Linn County 4-H Poultry kids will still have their poultry show this year, it won’t include any live birds, but it will be an experience they will never forget.
The 2015 Linn County 4-H Poultry Show takes place today at the Linn County Fairgrounds. Due to the Avian Influenza this year’s 4-H Poultry show will not include any live birds, but instead educational displays, egg show, photo bird show and fun contest.
