Green Iowa AmeriCorp

Along with the audit/weatherization process, Outreach and Education services help comprise an important part of how Green Iowa AmeriCorps’ volunteer members engage and contribute to their local communities throughout each service term. Outreach activities include a wide variety of pursuits: volunteering time for local causes, to volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, to delivering presentations or hosting booths about their services at community events. Whatever the activity, Green Iowa members seek to support the community as well as integrate their services to the best of their ability.

 Green Iowa AmeriCorp

Green Iowa AmeriCorps also seeks to stimulate an environmental consciousness and stewardship in communities by providing educational services free of cost and that are adaptable to any age group or audience.  We visit schools, community groups, conferences, or any other organized event.

New Pioneer’s “Soilmates”

  • New Pioneer’s “Soilmates” is an interactive, organic garden and compost education service for both children and adults that was founded by Education & Outreach Coordinator Scott Koepke.soilmates
  • Following his service in the Peace Corps in Senegal where he taught gardening, Scott developed the Soilmates curricula to focus on five content areas: gardening, composting, soil science, local foods and lifeskills.soilmatesFun, engaging props abound in all Soilmates gatherings: compost corrals, red wiggler worms, seeds, transplants, roots, garden tools, microscopes, living walls, mudshakes, crafts, and a newly-added aquaponics demo.soilmates
  • One of New Pioneer’s primary environmental missions is to stimulate the local production of organic food.  Soilmates’ child-driven focus hopes to advance that mission by growing stronger community roots and sprouting the next generation of gardener and soil lover.

Quaker Oats

  • Brian Drees from Quaker Oats will be at the fair this year as part of the Science Activities. The pictures below Brian is putting on a test milling demonstration and explaining the concept of aspiration, separating light material from heavy material using a column of air.
