RESULTS OF THE DRAFT HORSE PULL 2009

This was the third year for the Draft Horse Pull at The Linn County Fair in Central City. The pull was on Saturday, July 11 at noon in the grandstand. We had a lot of rain on Friday and we were concerned about being able to hold the pull on Saturday. The sun came out Friday afternoon that helped dried out the track to allow us get the track ready for the pull.

Each year the Draft Horse Pull grows at The Linn County Fair. Last year the horses pulled more then they did the year before breaking many records. We had ran out of bricks last year and had to use human weight to finish the pull. So, this year we had an extra pallet of blocks and it was a good thing because we almost used all four pallets. Draft Horse Pull is a demonstration of true horse power.

Another new thing this year with the help of the Roller Derby Girls we were able to keep the crowds quiet during the pull to allow the horses to be able to pull further. The horses are trained that as soon as they hear the hook hit the sled to start pulling and they pull until they hear noise to stop. So, you can see that it is very important to not only be quiet at the beginning of the pull but also at the end. Here are the results of those successful pulls:

The Linn County Fair Association would like to give a special thanks David McDonald for bringing his Clydsdale to display and talking to our visitors about draft horses; to the Cedar Rapids Roller Girls who were the crowd “cheer leaders”; and the cement block loaders – Jason, Tony S., Tony W, Matt, Tracy, Dustin, Willie, and Edsel. A big thank you to ALL the drivers and GREAT crowd that help make this event a success.

Great job. I don’t want to be a smartaleck, but they are Belgians, not Belgiums. Just a pet peeve of mine.
