As you know The Linn County Fair’s theme this year is “Going Green.” The Linn County Fair Association started many “green” things in years past to start to go “green.” One of those was the recycled garden art contest. The buzz is that The Linn County Fair Association is hosting the second annual Recycled Garden Art contest at The Linn County Fair in Central City, July 8-13.
Everyone wants to know how they can go “green”, well here is your opportunity to do just that. Now look around your garage full of “stuff.” Those many projects you have been meaning to get to, but when will you really get to them. Instead of sending the “stuff” to the landfill, why not make it into art.
Here is an opportunity for the residents of Linn County and surrounding areas to help keep “trash” out of the landfill. Instead take trash and turn it into art for your garden! You are probably thinking what do I have that can be turned into art. Do you have any of these items in your house, garage, attic: tires, old pots/pans, bowling ball, cans, boots, toilet seat/bowl, old silverware, old/broken jewelry, etc. These items can be turned into planters, fountains, gazing balls, wind chimes, or garden statues.
Below is a picture taken from last year’s recycled garden art contest and you will see the many different recycled items used to create beautiful garden art!
The contest is open to all residents of Linn County (metro areas included). Going Green is for everyone no matter their age. There are four age categories for the Recycled Garden Art Contest:
a. 3-11 (preschool thru 5th grade)
b. 12-18 (6th thru 12th grade)
c. 19-64 (adults)
d. Over 65 (seniors)
Each item must consist of 50% recycled material. Some of the items that have been turned into garden art consisted of but not limited to: bowling ball art, bottle bird feeder, metal sculpture, can snake, planters, wind chimes, water fountain, sun catcher, etc. Registration deadline is July 6, 2009. All entries must be checked in at the gate building on the fair grounds on Wednesday, July 8 from 9am to 5pm. All entries must be picked up on Monday, July 13 after 3pm.
Prizes will be awarded for the following:
a. Best of Show (from all categories as determined by the judges)
b. Peoples Choice (from all categories as determined by vote of fair goers)
c. First, second, and third place in each category.
